Does the M&P Shield and Shield 2.0 use the same magazine? ›

The same magazines from the original M&P will work in the 2.0.

With that being said, the Shield Plus has upped the capacity from 7 and 8 round magazines to 10 and 13 round magazines. With one in the chamber, the extended magazine in the Shield Plus doubles the capacity of the original and 2.0 Shield platforms.

The Bottom Line

The Smith & Wesson M&P M2. 0 is a full-size, striker-fired, steel and polymer gun with a 17+1 capacity. During testing, I found it to be reliable and extremely accurate. The ergonomics are very well done on this gun with four backstrap options.

The Hellcat has an aggressive grip texture, which helped in the snowy conditions, but did not impress the author. The Shield Plus fits nicely in hand and has a medium grip texture. Even with extra large hands, the pinky fit without going past the magazine.

Nowhere on the Shield Plus is it marked for use with +P loads, and the only indication that +P loads are acceptable is found in the manual, in which S&W merely mentions that such rounds will increase wear on firearm components. The company does explicitly state, however, that +P+ loads are not to be fired in this gun.

The rear serrations, on the other hand, are much better than the Glock. The serrations are just better designed. They have a more aggressive feel to them. So if you only plan on manipulating the gun using the rear of the slide, then the Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 is going to be better than the Glock.

The M&P Shield is the exception – it is capable of outstanding accuracy. I love little guns that shoot like big guns, and the Shield is certainly one of those. I can fairly easily keep a full magazine on an 8” circle at 25 yards with the Shield.

DESCRIPTION OF THE HAZARD: Smith & Wesson has identified a condition where the trigger bar pin could damage the lower trigger in certain M&P Shields in a way that may affect the functionality of the drop safety feature of the firearm, potentially allowing the pistol to discharge if it is dropped.

Our steel mag catch is required to work with the Shield Arms S15 magazine. Using our steel mag catch with plastic OEM magazines can cause increased wear on plastic mags and OEM mags may not drop free. We do not recommend using our steel mag catch with plastic OEM mags.

The Smith and Wesson shield holds only seven-round and it's a single stack firearm. So obviously it's going to be a lot smaller than the M&P 2.0 compact. If you look at the height of the gun, it's roughly a half-inch shorter. It's also around six ounces lighter.
